Arboretum Talk - Herbaria 101: Names, Taxa, and Systems
Description:
As a special treat this week, we welcome Dr. Christopher Puttock, the new curator of the University of Maryland (Norton-Brown) Herbarium, who will introduce us to the concepts of herbaria and plant classification, including nomenclature, taxonomy, and systematics. Herbarium is the name for a collection of preserved plant specimens, usually in a dried form and mounted on a sheet; and also the name for the scientific institute that stores and researches these specimens. The specimens in an herbarium are used as reference material. The University of Maryland Herbarium focuses on plants native to the State of Maryland.
