The Materialist Turn in Cairo Geniza Research
Description:
The Cairo Geniza is the largest single cache of documents from the medieval Middle East ever discovered. Recent efforts to digitize the Geniza's contents and make them available on-line has revolutionized research. This illustrated
talk will discuss some of the new approaches and discoveries of the past five years, and their significance for both Jewish and Middle Eastern history.
Prof. Marina Rustow holds the Charlotte Bloomberg Professorship in the Humanities at Johns Hopkins University, where she is an associate
professor in the Department of History.
