Active Assessment: Assessing Scientific Inquiry
Description:
The aim of this lecture is to propose an approach to the development of meaningful assessment procedures within the context of in-laboratory, scientific inquiry programs. The approach developed is termed active assessment and is constructed within the framework of authentic approaches to assessment. The lecture will provide an introduction to assessment; explain the principles of authentic assessment, explicate the thinking and procedures associated with active assessment and finally describe and exemplify active assessment within the context of the PHIRE (Phage Hunting Integrating Research and Education) program situated in the Hatfull Laboratory in the Pittsburgh Bacteriophage Institute at the University of Pittsburgh.
