Enabling Heart Valve Surgical Planning Through Imaging and Mechanics

Description:
Surgical treatment of heart valve disease remains subjective, despite the detailed quantitative information that medical images provide. Mitral valve repair has not been as widely applied as valve replacement despite repaired valves clear survival advantages. Surgical planning systems are being developed to let surgeons optimize mitral valve function. Using specialized computer interfaces and calculations to create and compare prospective surgical reconstructions of valves, surgeons can select optimal repair approaches. Robert D. Howe, a 1990 Stanford Ph.D graduate, is Abbott and James Lawrence Professor of Engineering and Associate Dean for Academic Programs in the Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. {Will appear in FYI on Nov 14, 2011
