Music Scholars Lecture Series: "Beyond the Canon's Aim", lecture by Professor Eric Wen (Curtis Institute of Music and Mannes College of Music)

The canon is the strictest form of imitation in music. This talk will examine how the technique of strict canon is adopted in several works by J. S. Bach. Rather than allowing this law to restrict his compositional ideas, Bach's use of canon becomes subsumed within a larger organizational design that encompasses coherent tonal progressions within a overriding large-scale structure. Examples will be drawn from a variety of works, including the Goldberg Variations, and a detailed analysis of the Sarabande from Bach's Orchestral Suite No. 2 in B minor. {Will appear in FYI on Nov 15, 2011
