Beyond the Classroom presents "The Last Mountain"

Director Bill Haney sounds the alarm in this penetrating documentary about the impact of coal mining on the citizens of West Virginias Coal River Valley, who are trying to prevent the plundering of one of the last untouched mountains in Appalachia. Aided by environmentalist Bobby Kennedy Jr., the townspeople protest against an energy conglomerate that uses ruinous mountain top removal techniques, despite the dangers to health and the environment. In the valleys of Appalachia, a battle is being fought over a mountain. The mining and burning of coal is at the epicenter of Americas struggle to balance its energy needs with environmental concerns. Nowhere is that concern greater than in Coal River Valley, West Virginia, where a small but passionate group of ordinary citizens are trying to stop Big Coal corporations from continuing the devastating practice of Mountain Top Removal. THE LAST MOUNTAIN shines a light on Americas energy needs and how those needs are being supplied. {Will appear in FYI on Mar 28, 2012
