Lecture on Musical Accompaniment for Silent Cinema - February 28

The Department of English will host a lecture on Accompanying Silent Cinema by Dr. Andrew Simpson. Simpson is Professor of Music at Catholic University, a frequent performer at the National Gallery of Art, and the House Accompanist for the Library of Congress. Simpson is also co-founder of the Snark Ensemble, an instrumental group that composes and performs new scores to silent films. Simpson will discuss the history of silent film accompaniment and how he improvises and composes for silent film. He will also accompany some short films on piano to illustrate some of the concepts he presents in his talk. This event is free and open to the public, with no advance ticketing required. {Will appear in FYI on Feb 21, 2012
