College of Computer, Mathematical and Natural Sciences and ADVANCE Present Dr. Patricia Thiel from Iowa State University on "Quasicrystals: Their Importance and Their Impact on Surface Science"

Dr. Patricia Thiel is the John D. Corbett Professor in Chemistry, a Distinguished Professor in Liberal Arts and Sciences, and a professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Iowa State University, as well as senior chemist with US-DOE's Ames Laboratory. Her research program in surface chemistry and nanoscience focuses on atomic-scale nanostructure evolution on surfaces. Balancing her research programs with teaching and service, she has held numberous administrative posts at Iowa State, including Department Chair of Chemistry, and Chief Research Office of Ames Laboratory. From her professional path and experiences as an educator and parent, Dr. Thiel has gained valuable perspective on cultural issues that women face in career advancement. {Will appear in FYI on Mar 12, 2012
