School of Music: Kitanodai Gagaku Ensemble

Celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Cherry Blossom Festival with the Kitanodai Gagakukai Ensemble as they perform Japanese classical music and dance with a tradition of over 1,000 years. The term Gagaku literally means elegant music, and was mostly performed at the Imperial court, in aristocratic society, and at important shrines and temples. The Maryland performance includes fully costumed Bugaku, court dance. Kitanodai Gagaku Kai was established in 1982 for the purpose of educating and raising the aesthetic sensibilities of young people; for promoting Japanese culture through gagaku concerts, workshops and performances at schools and communities; and for developing international cultural exchanges. Their appearance at Maryland is a special and rare event. Two performances: April 4 at 10am and 1pm {Will appear in FYI on Mar 29, 2012
