Physics Colloquium: A Contemporary Look at the Search for Higher Temperature Superconductors

Recent studies show that if electrical applications of superconductivity are to be possible at operating temperatures above the boiling temperature of liquid nitrogen, a new class of high temperature superconductors will be required. This need has led to a reenergized search for new, higher temperature superconductors. In this talk, Mac Beasley, Stanford University, will discuss the origins of the difficulties with the present materials and how they reveal a fundamental competition between the conditions commonly thought to be desirable for strong pairing interactions (e.g., strong correlations) and the transition temperature itself, and some proposals as to how to circumvent these limitations. {Will appear in FYI on Apr 17, 2012
