Heads Up: Revising Concepts of Brain Trauma and Sport-Related Head Injury
Description:
The Department of Kinesiology will host Dr. Alan I. Faden, M.D., professor of anesthesiology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and director of their Center for Shock, Trauma and Anesthesiology Research (STAR), for their 2012 Husman Lecture.
Dr. Faden will discuss the consequences of traumatic brain injury (TBI), with a focus on sport-related head injury, and describe new approaches to prevention and treatment, which have implications for public health policy and rules governing organized sports. The increased recognition of the severity of sports-related head injuries experienced by professional athletes and youth sport participants alike have brought attention to the need for better prevention and treatment strategies.
