MCHOTSE - Ernesto Capello, "The Second French Geodesic Mission to Ecuador & Commemorative Visual Culture, 1901-1906"

Description:
Participants will discuss Dr. Capello's paper about the symbolic use of pyramids as 18th century survey artifacts, subsequently reinterpreted by 19th century Ecuadorians, scientists, and artists. The 1901-1906 French and Ecuadorian mission used pyramids to establish authenticity in the face of opposition from conservative Ecuadorian activists and indigenous communities, each of which opposed the geodetic measurements.
