MCHOTSE - Rosemblatt & BenmerguĂ, "Japanese Internment and the Science of Democracy"
Description:
Participants will discuss a forthcoming article by Karin Alejandra Rosemblatt and Leandro Daniel BenmerguĂ, Dept. of History, "Japanese Internment and the Science of Democracy: Colonialism, Social Engineering, and Government Administration."
In the 1940s, the Office of Indian Affairs conducted social science experiments on internees to test theories of acculturation. Psychiatrist Andrew Leighton sought to develop a "science of democracy," which would help the nation deal with minority populations.
