MCHOTSE - David Tomblin, "Where were the Apaches?"

Description:
Participants will discuss a paper by David Tomblin, Department of History and STS Programs, titled "Where Were the Apaches? The Legacy of Harold Weavers Prescribed Burn Experiments on the Fort Apache Indian Reservation." Natives at the Fort Apache and Collville Reservations understood fire as a tool to shape their environment, but they were marginalized from forest management during 1940-1960. Harold Weaver, who rediscovered controlled burns in this period, later regretted excluding local knowledge. We will discuss the implications of this exclusion for more recent research about forest management. Direct paper requests and inquiries to Betsy Mendelsohn bmendel@umd.edu.
