Masculinities, Race and Education in the Neighborhood Context

Urban masculine dispositions are frequently identified as contributors to racial differences in educational attitudes and performance. However, most quantitative studies do not link neighborhood features to gendered attitudes, and infrequently consider the influence of multiple masculinities in educational stratification. Dr. Johnsons study extends research in this area by exploring how neighborhood role modeling characteristics and masculine dispositions shape black and white adolescents' educational attitudes and behavior. Using Principal Component Analysis to create masculinity scales (i.e. expressive cool pose, hyper-vulnerability, and hyper-masculinity), data from the Maryland Adolescent Development in Context Study (MADICS), and Hierarchical Linear Modeling, this study finds evidence of an attitude-achievement paradox, where masculine dispositions relate to the rejection of dominant achievement ideologies, but not with youths' actual grades. {Will appear in FYI on Nov 17, 2012
