ENST Fall 2013 Seminar Series: TODAY, Dr. Sharon Kingsland - "The Challenge of the Postwar Period: Advancing Whole-organism Biology in the Molecular Age", 4:00 PM, ANSC 0408

Description:
Please join us in welcoming Dr. Sharon Kingsland, professor in the History of Science and Technology Department at Johns Hopkins University, as she presents the first seminar of the ENST Fall 2013 Seminar Series! Dr. Kingsland will present her research into the establishment of the first "phytotron" (so named because its control panel resembled that of a cyclotron) in 1949: the Earhart Laboratory for Plant Research at the California Institute of Technology. This Caltech model stimulated an international phytotron "movement" which can be seen as a counter-cultural response to molecular biology after the discovery of the double helix. The talk will explore the impact of the world's first phytotron on physiological ecology, one of the major areas of growth in postwar ecology. {Will appear in FYI on Sep 18, 2013
