Beyond the Classroom presents "War on Whistleblowers: Free Press and the National Security State"

Description:
Long before anyone ever heard of Edward Snowden, President George W. Bush was using the National Security Agency to conduct warrantless surveillance of U.S. citizens in violation of federal law. Barack Obama ran on a platform of reversing Bushs policies, and the country couldnt vote him into office fast enough. And things did change. To the shock and awe of supporters, Obama conducted a campaign of intimidation against journalists, causing a chilling effect on news gathering(Associated Press). As filmmaker Robert Greenwald makes clear in this documentary, the president prosecuted those who felt compelled to spill the beans on government wrongdoing. The film interviews David Carr, Lucy Dalgish, Seymour Hersh and, the original whistleblower, Daniel Ellsberg. A fun fact: The Obama administration has indicted more people for violating secrecy than all previous administrations put together - Bill Keller, Pulitzer-winning former editor, New York Times. {Will appear in FYI on Oct 7, 2013
