A Dangerous Liaison? Casanova's Patron and Sabbatean Kabbalists In Bohemia

Description:
This lecture will explore the connection between the prominent Habsburg Aristocrat and Giacomo Casanova's patron, Count Joseph Karl Emmanuel Von Waldstein, and Sabbatian kabbalists active in Bohemia in the second half of the 18th century. Pawel Maciejko is the Joseph H. and Belle Braun Senior Lecturer in the Humanities at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. His book The Mixed Multitude: Jacob Frank and the Frankist Movement 1755-1816 won the Salo Baron Prize awarded by the American Academy of Jewish Research. {Will appear in FYI on Nov 5, 2013
