(PHYSICS COLLOQUIUM) Experimental Quantum Geometry: Testing the Stillness of Space

It is possible that new physics of quantum geometry at the Planck scale has observable effects on macroscopic scales. There may be no such thing as a massive body at rest; there may be a universal noise in position with Planck spectral density. Some theoretical motivations behind this idea will be reviewed, and an experiment now underway at Fermilab to test it will be described, by Craig Hogan from the University of Chicago. {Will appear in FYI on Nov 5, 2013
