Arboretum Walk: Public Health Garden Phase 2

Come have a look at progress on the Public Health Garden, including the recently completed research rain garden. A project of Dr. Allen P. Davis, Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering, the rain garden will take in stormwater runoff, filter it though three-tiers of gardens, and store the cleaned water in an underground cistern. The water will be measured for pollution levels before and after filtering. The tiered gardens were planted with native plants grown on campus from locally-collected seed. This spring, we plan to construct the Community Garden on the other half of the hill and install the Urban Orchard on the south side of Eppley. The collected water from the cistern will be pumped back up the hill using a solar-powered pump and used to water the Public Health Garden Teaching Garden and Community Garden. {Will appear in FYI on Dec 2, 2013
