Go East, Young Viking! Scandinavian Influences in the Rise of the Kievan Rus from the Eighth to the Tenth Century

By Dr. James Pasternak Rochester Institute of Technology, Department of Modern Languages and Cultures Dr. Pasternak will focus on the role that early medieval Scandinavians played in the development of the first Russian state at Kiev. He will analyze the tripartite influence Scandinavians had on extra-territorial societies as traders, colonists, and warriors. His talk will trace the development of historical events from the perspective of various primary sources. The presentation will focus on the period from arrival at Ladoga to Novgorod through the ascendance to power at Kiev from the eighth through the tenth centuries. {Will appear in FYI on Dec 4, 2013
