Beyond the Classroom presents An Evening with Christian Heyne, Legislative Director, Coalition to Stop Gun Violence on "Beyond Newtown: Creating a World Safe for Children?"

Since the December 2012 public school massacre in Newtown, CT, the U.S. has seen 44 school shootings on K-12 or college campuses! Christian Heyne is legislative director with the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence. He grew up in Thousand Oaks, CA, one of Americas safest cities. He began advocating for better gun laws after his parents were shot on Memorial Day 2005 while returning a boat from a holiday vacation. His father survived multiple gunshots, but his mother was killed. Christian and his father, Tim, started a chapter of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence in Ventura County, where they helped to pass local laws, including one that requires reporting lost and stolen handguns within the county. At California State University, Chico, he started the first college chapter of the Brady Campaign that raised awareness through lie-in events and other campus activities, and lobbied the state legislature for bills like AB 1471, which led to micro-stamping technology in California. {Will appear in FYI on Mar 5, 2014
