NanoColloquium: Steve Granick

Description:
Granick, of the University of Illinois, shows Some Surprises and Open Questions in Soft Materials. Abstract: A fundamental materials challenge is to form structure that is not frozen in place but instead reconfigures internally and that adapts to its environment. This talk describes quantitative studies of how this can happen. We show the powerful role of synchronized motion in self-assembly. Living cells transportation problems parallel polymer chain trajectories. Simple experiments, at single-particle and single-molecule resolution, can dissect macroscopic phenomena in ways that surprise. {Will appear in FYI on Feb 19, 2014
