AASD Spring Brown Bag Series NFL Means Not For Long: Discipline, Control, and the Black Body with Robert W. Turner Ph.D.

Description:
Dr. Turner will present from his work on the experiences of Black NFL athletes and how they narrate and navigate their social position visàvis the league and wider society. Building on theories of institutional control, socialization and discipline, while drawing from literature on Black marginality; his project demonstrates that: (1) African American athletes generally employ an Afrocentric or Racial Integrationist approach to deal with issues of race in the NFL; and (2) the men frame their views of the leagues disciplinary policies through an understanding of the restricted opportunities available in society for African Americans. {Will appear in FYI on Mar 12, 2014
