Talk Tonight: Farmers Markets and Nutrition

Description:
The next Sustainable Agriculture Tuesdays seminar turns our attention away from food production and toward food access. Who gets to eat the food we grow? Who does not? Why? What is being done to increase access to farm fresh foods, connecting farmers to consumers and improving nutrition? Dr. Stephanie Grutzmacher (UMD, Food Supplement Nutrition Education) will provide an introduction to nutrition spending in the Farm Bill, what food supplement programs (including FSNE at UMD) look like, and some details about participants. Amy Crone (Maryland Farmers Market Association) will discuss the increased popularity of farmers markets in the United States and special programs in Maryland that are helping farmers sell to consumers of all income levels. Both speakers will discuss program goals for increasing fresh fruit and veggie consumption among participants, such as EBT at farmers markets. {Will appear in FYI on Apr 22, 2014
