Immigration to Latin America: Panel Discussion of Judith Freidenberg's "The Invention of the Jewish Gaucho"

Judith Freidenberg’s book, "The Invention of the Jewish Gaucho: Villa Clara and the Construction of Argentine Identity" (University of Texas Press, 2009), has been translated into Spanish and published by Prometeo Editorial, 2013. In a rendition of Villa Clara’s social history, the book interweaves ethnographic and historical information to understand the saga of European immigrants drawn by Argentina’s open-door policy in the nineteenth century and its impact on the current transformation of immigration into multicultural discourses in the twenty-first century. Judith Freidenberg is faculty with the Department of Anthropology. The book will be discussed by a panel of UMD faculty: Laura Demaría (SPAP), Patricio Korzeniewicz (SOCY), and Marsha Rozenblit (HIST). Refreshments will be served. Please RSVP to if you plan to attend. For more information about this event, contact LASC at or 301-405-6459. {Will appear in FYI on Apr 22, 2014
