Immigration to Latin America: Panel Discussion of Judith Freidenberg's "The Invention of the Jewish Gaucho"

Description:
Judith Freidenberg’s book, "The Invention of the Jewish Gaucho: Villa Clara and the Construction of Argentine Identity" (University of Texas Press, 2009), has been translated into Spanish and published by Prometeo Editorial, 2013. In a rendition of Villa Clara’s social history, the book interweaves ethnographic and historical information to understand the saga of European immigrants drawn by Argentina’s open-door policy in the nineteenth century and its impact on the current transformation of immigration into multicultural discourses in the twenty-first century. Judith Freidenberg is faculty with the Department of Anthropology. The book will be discussed by a panel of UMD faculty: Laura Demaría (SPAP), Patricio Korzeniewicz (SOCY), and Marsha Rozenblit (HIST). Refreshments will be served. Please RSVP to lasc@umd.edu if you plan to attend. For more information about this event, contact LASC at lasc@umd.edu or 301-405-6459. {Will appear in FYI on Apr 22, 2014
