Wellness Tip of the Week: Keep Your Cool

Heat waves can be frequent and intense this time of year and can put all of us at risk for heat-related illness, or even death. Take precautions and prep for 90-degree days. Staying hydrated is critical; don’t wait to feel thirsty to drink up. Keep a refillable bottle of water with you wherever you go. If you plan to exercise or play sports outdoors, start off slow with less intense workouts for short periods of time. Wear light-colored, breathable clothing. Schedule your outdoor time during the cooler parts of the day and take frequent breaks in the shade. If you do feel yourself getting exhausted from the heat – feeling confused, disoriented or unsteady – get to a cooler environment immediately and consider seeking medical attention. {Will appear in FYI on Jul 6, 2014
