The Comedy of the Generation Gap (What Do Menander and Mike Nichols Have in Common?)
Description:
Surprising parallels exist between the comedy of the twentieth century and the plays of Menander, an Athenian who wrote in the fourth century BCE. In particular, this talk will explore the comic ramifications of misunderstanding between parents and children, as well as the jealousy of an older rival for a younger woman's (or man's) attention. Lest the tone become too weighty and academic, the talk will be leavened with film clips from The Graduate. Presented by Lillian Doherty, PhD, Professor of Classics. Reception follows lecture that is in memory of Dr. Dora Kennedy, adjunct professor, College of Education.
